Boomboxes, ghetto-blasters, call them what you want – they are a neglected technology in the advent of mobile phone speakers. But we remember them fondly and they still have a place, particularly at the sonic heart of

Phil Kline’s charming Boombox carolling event, Phil Kline's Unsilent Night, that started in the heyday of Boomboxes in New York in 1992.

OCM is organising Oxford’s own Phil Kline's Unsilent Night alongside 40 cities around the world. It will be an atmospheric walk through historic Oxford, accompanied by Phil’s soundtrack with all its bells and festive splendour.

If you want to be part of the walk but you don’t have a Boombox relic at home, or just because you fancy having a go and making your own, come and join Upcycled Sounds expert Nicholas O’Brien in our hands-on workshop where you’ll transform a box into your own portable speaker. Bring a box to up-cycle or use one of ours sourced from Orinoco.
