New music for gamelan and prepared piano

Leading a programme which explores tonalities and sound worlds, Rolf Hind’s Beyond the Island interweaves Javanese metallophones and gong chimes with prepared piano.

Gamelan is an ensemble from the island of Java in Indonesia, and traditionally plays in either a sléndro (5 note) or an unrelated pélog (7 note) tuning. The composers featured in this concert have all explored what happens when you combine the tunings together, and in some cases when you add or adapt a ‘western’ instrument in the mix. The programme includes a chamber work by Symon Clarke for gamelan instruments and flute/alto flute.

The gamelan quartet are members of Hammer & Bronze, a new ensemble promoting the commissioning, composition and performance of new repertoire for gamelan instruments, and of Southbank Gamelan Players, ensemble-in-residence at Southbank Centre. They are delighted to be continuing their collaboration with Rolf Hind, having performed in his On what weft are woven the waters (Huddersfield Festival 2017), and Tiger’s Nest (New Music Biennial, Southbank Centre July 2019, BBC R3 New Music Show).

Rolf Hind has established himself as a major force as soloist, composer, recording artist and chamber musician. He has given recitals at many of Europe’s new music festivals, at Carnegie Hall and at Sydney Opera House.
