We returned to Yellow Submarine during the Easter holidays to run a DJ workshop.

Introduction

Following on from the successful song writing workshop we ran with Yellow Submarine during February half-term 2015, we returned for another fantastic music session and this time we brought DJ Danny Wheeler along to work with the group.

Working alongside staff from Yellow submarine we delivered an afternoon session in Djing and engaged 10 young people in the workshop.

Context

The Yellow Submarine is a charity that support people with learning needs and disabilities. As part of this they run a lot of holiday activities for children and young people in Oxford and Witney.

We wanted to continue working with Yellow Submarine during the school holiday period and thought it would be great idea to get them involved in a Djing workshop where they could learn to mix and play their favourite songs.

The Story

Danny delivered a digital DJing workshop using Tractor, a laptop, X1 Kontrol and a DJM Mixer. Working in small groups of a bout 3 at a time young people learnt about the following topics throughout the course of the workshop:

•What is DJing

•How to DJ

•Functions and Controls

•Tunes and Music Genres

•How to cue a track

The sessions were really interactive and the young people really enjoyed getting to play on the decks and be professional with them.

Next Steps

This was our second time working with Yellow Submarine and we have thoroughly enjoyed it.

The charity are now working with young people in Oxford in addition to Witney and we have had a discussion around working in partnership so we can deliver more music sessions to the young people the charity work with.

A few of the young people expressed wishes to get involved in some music technology workshops. We will speak to the guys at Yellow Submarine about organising this for the next session.

Thank you to everyone that helped to make this project happen.
