I have a dream. Admittedly, it’s not as powerful in its rhetoric as Martin Luther King’s, but it’s sympathetic to it.

I have a dream that when I wake in the morning and dive into the mediastream, the casual racists, neo-fascists, plutocratic manipulators, warmongers, and their figureheads – the populist demagogues – are recognised for what they usually are: dangerous self-obsessed psychopaths. In this dream, they’re not magnified by the spectacle, glamorised or dignified, but held to account, diminished, even ridiculed.

I have a dream where music doesn’t just keep us company, maintain our spirits, manage our moods, make us productive, sell us fantasies on the big screen, or bathe us in nostalgia of better times long gone. In this dream, music is both danceable with great songs and it feeds a hunger for curiosity. It makes the future audible. It doesn’t forget our social reality but produces it and makes it palpable, that fosters togetherness with friends and strangers. It doesn’t tell me what to feel and think, but allows this collective body to contribute.

I have a dream and I want to live it and share it. You might think I’m having a laugh, but I’m inviting you to have the last laugh. On 2 May at OVADA, Tin Men and the Telephone will land with the aim of making our dreams come true. Put Trump, Farage, Le Pen, Erdogan, Kim Jong-un and others in their place to restore a true harmony, melody and rhythm to the world? You’ve got it. Fantastic musicianship with imagination, groove, hooks, and an ear to the future? Audiences and critics think so. A sense of the absurd, Monty Pythonesque animations and comedy? That’s a bonus. Live music with which you can interact? Don’t forget to download the app in advance (and have your phone charged).

To paraphrase another legend: You may say I’m a dreamer / But I’m not the only one. I hope next Thursday you’ll join us / And the world will be as one.
