Sounds of Oxfordshire Education
Commissioned by BBC Oxford as part of Made in England
23rd April - 31st October 2009
Working with sound artist and composer Robert Jarvis, OCM was commissioned by BBC Oxford to produce Sounds of Oxfordshire as part of Made in England celebrating St Georges Day 2009. Over six months, Robert worked with the BBC and its listeners to collect people’s favourite, meaningful, disappearing or characterful sounds from around Oxfordshire. Their stories and sounds were incorporated into a commissioned piece of music which was premiered during an hour long documentary on BBC Oxford.
Robert worked with schools around the county including John Mason Secondary School in Abingdon, Windmill Primary School in Headington and Stonesfield Primary School near Witney. Each school worked in a different way to collect sounds and stories some of which were incorporated in to the final piece of music. The children were encouraged to be ‘sonic investigators’ collecting sounds that were meaningful to them. The schools created their own soundscapes from the sounds they had collected, these were included in the documentary.
