Vauxhall Pleasure

An audio-visual experiential installation about sustainability in the city

Composer Paul Whitty’s and visual artist Anna Best’s collaboration Vauxhall Pleasure draws upon past history, present condition and future plans of a location whilst exploring the relationship between political protest and entertainment, traffic and pedestrians, pollution, breathing and song.

A multi-part protest piece originally commissioned by Tate Modern, Vauxhall Pleasure has since been developed into a chamber ensemble performance and installation of surround sound and visuals that will take place in the historic Holywell Music Room.

The work raises important issues surrounding sustainable transport, planning and pollution, and will be accompanied by a symposium on these subjects in collaboration with researchers from the Oxford Institute of Sustainable Development and Department of Planning at Oxford Brookes University, and the University of Oxford’s Transport Studies Unit and Centre for the Environment (OUCE).
