Matthew Sharp

Matthew Sharp

A double bill of musical versatility and virtuosity.

Matthew Sharp presents an evening featuring captivating new music for solo cello as well as witty, nail-biting and entrancing music theatre with goggles on! He has performed worldwide as a solo cellist, singer and theatre performer. He combines core, ‘classical’ activities – with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Opera North, recordings for Sony, Naxos and Avie – with a uniquely pioneering outlook both within music and across disciplines. Tonights performance will also include a piece composed by James Yarde who recently wrote and performed a piece for the BBC Proms in 2008.

Paul Patterson - Suite for solo cello op 62 (1987)

Valentine Silvestrov – Elegy for cello

playing 2 Tamtams (1999) UK Premiere

Benjamin Britten - 1st suite for solo cello op 72 (1964)

Johnny’s Midnight Goggles By Pete M Wyer:

Together Matthew Sharp anf Pete M Wyer make up SharpWire. Tonight they present a mind-and genre-melting explosion of story-telling, ravishing singing, virtuoso cello-playing and sonic wizardry – Tim Burton meets John Adams, Philip Pullman meets Paganini. The story of Johnny starts in suburban France and transports us to Takrilakastan to which he has been spirited away by evil monsters hell-bent on destroying the world. A mysterious pair of Goggles opens a portal into another world from which the rescue attempt and the adventure begins…
