Arrivals: Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia

Arrivals was a season of events celebrating the music and art of the Baltic States on the occasion of their entry into the European Union. The project was part of Evolving City, an initiative coordinated by Oxford Inspires and funded by the Urban Cultural Programme. It was a collaboration between OCM and Modern Art Oxford. For MAO, Arrivals is a series of exhibitions over two years (still ongoing) at Modern Art Oxford and Turner Contemporary, Margate, introducing the work of artists from the expanded European Union.

For OCM Arrivals was three projects:

Ketubah – a wedding installation by Max Reinhardt in collaboration with Lithuanian artists G-Lab and Arkadijus Gotesmanas. (See separate entry under Ketubah). Ketubah was also part of a wider Lithuanian festival in October featuring a residency by Zilvinas Lanzbergas at Modern Art Oxford, a production of The Masquerade by Mikhail performed by the Small State Theatre of Vilnius at the Oxford Playhouse and Lithuanian films as part of OxDox Film Festival.

The Weekend Guitar Trio. - Robert Jürendal, 21st to 25th November 2005 Tõnis Leemats and Mart Soo. The trio were chosen for an Oxford residency by BBC Radio 3 Late Junction presenter, Fiona Talkington. They spent a week in Oxford and performed at Shotover Day Centre, Matrix Music Centre in Sutton Courtney, the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, did a jam session with the Oxford Improvisers and a major concert at the Jacqueline du Pré Music Building. The project was supported by the Estonian Embassy and opened by Estonian Ambassdor HE Dr Kaja Tael and featured an exhibition by visual artist Juri Kask and poetry by Kristiina Ehin and animations from the Estonian film studio Joonisfilm.

Latvian Radio Chamber Choir and Gavin Bryars. The Latvian Radio Chamber Choir were invited to Oxford by OCM and Gavin Bryars specially for Arrivals where they performed in the beautiful setting of St Barnabas Church. They performed a programme of music by Gavin Bryars and a selection of contemporary Latvian composers. The choir is comprised of soloists from one of the most distinctive choirs in Europe, the Latvian Radio Choir and conducted by Kaspars Putninš. Gavin performed with the choir on harmonium for his fabulous work, On Photography, and the concert marked the launch of the album of the same name on Gavin’s record label.
