The "guardian angel" of Argentinian chamamé. A rich mix of colour and rhythm, light and shadow, nostalgia and joy.
Chango Spasiuk plays chamamé, a warm-hearted, accordion-based music that taps into native Guarani, Spanish, Brazilian, Criollo and European traditions. Its natural home is north-east Argentina, which is where Chango was born. A fiery and sensitive virtuoso on the accordion, he plays with an audacity rarely seen in musicians of this genre. In 2005 he won the Best Newcomer award in the BBC Radio 3 World Music Awards and this year he has a new album ‘Pynandi’ and brings to Oxford his six piece band.
“Spasiuk has revitalised the music’s barn-dance traditions to create something thrillingly modern and cosmopolitan.” The Times
