Voice

A cappella voices: Voice Victoria Couper, Clemmie Franks, Emily Burn www.voicetrio.co.uk

Voice is a young, female a cappella trio performing repertoire spanning both ages and continents. Formed in 2006, voice explores and performs repertoire for three voices which includes a versatile blend of early music, world folk song arrangements and contemporary compositions.

Hildegard of Bingen features prominently in this diverse repertoire; all three singers having performed throughout Europe and in America with the early music vocal ensemble Sinfonye under Stevie Wishart. Contemporary music has recently become a significant part of their repertoire and they been working with British composer Marcus Davidson for over a year. His new works are inspired by voice’s love of world folksongs and medieval music.

Voice have collaborated with a number of artists and dancers and have performed across London; as part of an acoustic installation at Shunt Lounge (a disused railway arch at London Bridge); in the Royal Festival Hall lift; and at Dalston Mill, a city wheatfield, for Barbican Arts. They have also taken part in festivals in London and elsewhere in the UK, including the London A Cappella Festival at Kings Place, Spitalfield’s Festival and Cheltenham Music Festival.

‘In a musical world where genres and repertoires are readily pigeon-holed, Voice is refreshing for its keenness to avoid such barriers. It’s really good to be able to hear Hildegard von Bingen right alongside Balkan folk tunes and fresh-off-the-page commissions – all sung with distinctiveness of style, intriguing and convincing shifts of vocal timbre, and an appealing freshness of presentation.’
