trioVD formed in early 2005 as part of the Leeds Improvised Music Association (LIMA), a Leeds-based community of musicians, artists, DJs, and educators dedicated to the creation and promotion of contemporary improvised music. They first began experimenting with the possible connections between open, improvised forms and structured composed sections. By focusing on the connections between the world of contemporary improvisation and contemporary alternative music, trioVD aims to be fully inclusive of, not only the jazz vocabulary, but the language and textures found in contemporary marginal music such as Lightning Bolt and Battles, Venetian Snares and Fennesz. This philosophy is carried through to performances in terms of the bands it has played with and the venues it has performed at.
