Paul Newland, Paul Whitty & Dominic Lash

Paul Whitty is a Reader in Composition, Research Director for Film, Fine Art and Music, and Co-Director of the Sonic Art Research Unit at Oxford Brookes University. His work has been performed by IXION, Ensemble Expose, London Sinfonietta, Tim Brady, Ensemble Cattrall, dB ensemble, Nosferatu, Jane Chapman, Michael Finnissy, Paul Goodey, [rout], Philip Howard, Kate Ryder and Mieko Kanno, and featured at State Of The Nation, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, Gaudeamus Music Week, ICA, Ultima Festival, Tate Britain, BMIC Cutting Edge Series and Tour, and Brighton Festival.

He has received awards from ACE, AHRC, British Academy, Britten-Pears Foundation, British Council, Banff Centre for the Arts, Hinrichsen Foundation, Holst Foundation, RVW Trust and PRSF. Broadcasts of his work have been made by London Sinfonietta, IXION, [rout], Philip Howard, Jane Chapman, Ensemble Cattrall, Mark Knoop.

Recordings include thirty-nine pages - a re-organisation of Cesar Franck's Sonata for violin and piano - performed by Darragh Morgan and Mary Dullea (Metier); and seven pages - an exploration of the internal soundworld of Gyorgy Ligeti's Continuum in collaboration with harpsichordist Jane Chapman (NMC).

Paul is a founding member of [rout] an ensemble that he directs with composers Sam Hayden and Paul Newland. Paul has a particular interest in collaborative practice. His collaborative project Vauxhall Pleasure with Anna Best consisted of a site event at Vauxhall Cross, London, an installation at the Museum of Garden History as part of their Tempered Ground exhibition, two performances at Tate Britain and a performance for OCM in Autumn 2009.

 

Paul Newland is currently Professor of Composition at both the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and at Trinity Laban, London.  His work had been performed and broadcast by ensembles and artists such as [rout], 175 East, Arditti Quartet, Asko Ensemble, BBC Symphony Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Richard Casey, Jane Chapman, Composers Ensemble, Exquisite Corpse, Rolf Hind, Philip Howard, Huuj Ensemble, Ives Ensemble, Ixion, Jane's Minstrels, Seth Josel, Mieko Kanno, London Sinfonietta, Noszferatu, Psappha, and Opus 20.

 

Recent projects include “1-4” for solo harpsichord commissioned for Jane Chapman premiered at The Spitz, “situation 1”, “situation 2” and “environment” premiered by [rout] and “time quivers” for ensemble Radius premiered at Wigmore Hall. He is currently working on a new piece for the London Symphony Orchestra commissioned as part of their recent project UBS Soundscapes:Pioneers.

He is a co-founder of [rout], a collection of musicians and composers dedicated to collaborative inter-disciplinary performance. He also formed the electric guitar duo Exquisite Corpse with guitarist David Arrowsmith. Exquisite Corpse's focus is the exploration of the physical quality and presence of sound through collaborative performance and structured improvisation.

Paul has received a number of awards including the RPS Composition Prize 1990, a Paul Hamlyn Foundation Award in 1993 and a Special Mention at the 1995 International Gaudeamus New Music Week. In 1995 Gyorgy Ligeti awarded him the Royal Academy of Music's Josiah Parker Prize for “peripeteia”.

 

Dominic Lash is a freely improvising double bassist, although his activities also range much more widely. Based in Oxford, he performs with musicians such as Tony Conrad, Evan Parker and Steve Reid, while his current collaborative projects include Barkingside, The Convergence Quartet and the Imaginary String Trio.   He has performed internationally; festival appearances include Akbank Jazz Festival (Istanbul), Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, Konfrontationen (Nickelsdorf), Manchester Jazz Festival and Tampere Jazz Happening. His work has been broadcast on a number of radio stations, including BBC Radios 1 and 3 and Germany's SWR2.
