Nathaniel Mann

Nathaniel is an artist, performer, composer and sound designer.  Performing solo and as one third of Dead Rat Orchestra, he draws strongly on folk idioms whilst using unusual objects (including 2x4, ukulele, guitar, phonofiddle and meat cleaver!) and conventional instruments to create unique and playfully experimental music. Nathaniel is currently an artist in residence with OCM and Pitt Rivers Museum. His residency is part of Sound and Music’s Embedded project.

Audible Forces:

“Pigeon Whistles”

For Nathaniel Mann’s “Pigeon Whistles”, he releases a ‘kit’ (flock) of Birmingham Roller Pigeons, each carrying a whistle to create a moment of music shaped by the natural lilt of the birds in flight.  Their movement is audibly traced out against the sky and listeners on the ground are left to imagine their continued chorus as it drifts away, hovering in the near-distance.  The pigeons have been bred and trained for the purpose by experienced pigeon breeder Peter Petravicius.  Mann was inspired by the Chinese and Indonesian pigeon whistles in the Pitt Rivers Museum.  The resourcefulness reflected in many of the museum’s objects prompted him to choose recycled materials for his design.  His whistles are made from 35mm plastic film pots and each is tuned to one of fourteen notes.  When the pigeons take flight, the wind blows through the whistles and together they create drifting clusters of notes.

Nathaniel Mann is a Sound and Music Embedded artist in residence with the Pitt Rivers Museum and OCM. Embedded is supported by Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.  Follow his residency at pittriversmann.blogspot.co.uk.
