Appearing prominently in Michael Nyman’s scoring for Peter Greenaway films, Alexander Balanescu’s violin is no stranger to the screen, and the Balanescu Quartet has built a reputation for its well-integrated multi-media performances. Second Breath is a deeply moving reflection on the life of acclaimed sculptor and Bergen-Belsen survivor Maurice Blik, whose stunning bronze figures suggest awakenings, new beginnings, a second breath. The films and images contain flashbacks to the terrors of the Holocaust, but the work as a whole is an affirmation of life.
Play is composed for rare unearthed footage of the Ballet Russe in unguarded moments on an Australian beach in the 1930s. With spins and leaps in the sand, in their swimsuits, members of the legendary dance troupe have fun with a camera and display their youthful energy. The concert will also include material from the Quartet’s repertoire.
