During 2005 New College Choir were exploring new ground with a trio of CDs celebrating 20th century music. At the same time OCM became aware that the hugely talented jazz pianist and composer, Nikki Yeoh, was keen to explore writing for choirs and the marriage seemed perfect. Nikki was commissioned by OCM to write a new work for the choir which was performed as part of a programme of contemporary choral music in New College Chapel.
Nikki took a very personal approach to the challenge. The new piece, entitled River Spirit, was about the near death of her newly born son. “Yeoh seemed able to transform the choir into an orchestra without in any way debasing its choral signature, using the piano at the end to heighten this effect.” Oxford Times
