World Premiere
Sacred Voices in Oxford will be the first ever performance of a collaboration between two of the world’s strongest vocal traditions, featuring Tunisian vocalist and oud player, Dhafer Youssef and Estonian choir, Vox Clamantis. Both voices draw on the heritage of sacred music to create powerfully emotive sounds.
This brand new work, centred on the evocative sounds of Youssef’s Sufi-influenced singing, and Vox Clamantis’ polyphonic work (heavily influenced by the atmospheric sound of Gregorian chant) exploits the wonderful dichotomy of music which is at once steeped in tradition and entirely fresh and vibrant. The Sheldonian Theatre provides a uniquely atmospheric and historic setting for this meeting of sacred voices.
The music is co-commissioned by OCM with South Hill Park and the Turner Sims Concert Hall for RealiSE Live, a new regional commissioning network for the south east.
