Composer Helen
Ottaway and sound designer Alastair Goolden created a moving
and contemplative musical experience from the sound fragments
that people leave behind. During the spring they collected
stories, memories, music and voices from around the area.
With Thin Air they celebrate the history and architecture
of Dorchester Abbey and evoke a sense of the collective soul
of all who have passed through and all who will pass through
the building. Audiences Took a walk through this ancient space
and their movement trigger ed voices singing - speaking -
chanting - the sounds seeming to literally emanate from the
fabric of the building. Each walk or combination of walks
conjured a unique piece of music.
Thin Air to me was somehow about
dancing – the grace of movement brought it to life and
the beauty of carefully–selected music created mysterious
and evocative engagement.” Thin Air, St Fin Barre’s
Cathedral, Cork, Michael Burrows, Dean.
Produced and commissioned by OCM in collaboration with Oxford
Playhouse and Dorchester Abbey.
Thin Air is part of Oxfordshire 2007 and the Dorchester Festival.
