Slawomir Kurkiewicz: double-bass
Michal Miskiewicz: drums
Trio are a
real success story. They are the band of Polish trumpeter
Tomasz Stanko, who have just recorded their first album on
the ECM label and, despite all being under 30, have been playing
together for 12 years. They combine their own original compositions
with unusual and sophisticated reworkings of “standards”
by other composers including Wayne Shorter and Björk.
Stanko argues that “In the entire history of Polish
jazz, we’ve never had a band like this one. I’m
surprised by these musicians every day. They just keep getting
better and better.” But they are much more than just
Stanko’s ‘backing band’.
In Poland, Wasilewski, Kurkiewicz and
Miskiewicz have a strong reputation as a group in their own
right. They have won many awards, and released five albums
for independent labels. Jazz critic John Fordham mentions
Brad Mehldau as a point of musical reference in his 4 star
Guardian review of their first ECM album, and Trio are highly
recommended for those who enjoy Tord Gustavsen’s or
Esbjorn Svennson’s music.
