Cello playing is at the centre of Matthew
Barley’s career, although his musical world has virtually
no geographical, social or stylistic boundaries. In his new
solo show, Matthew takes us on a trip through early Central
European shamanism, Europe's timeless Gregorian Chants and
four centuries of classical music with works by Gabrielli,
Bach, Kodaly, and minimalist composer Steve Reich. A new work
by John Metcalfe and a collaboration with DJ Bee/ Peter Wiegold
bring us to the UK and today. Matthew is much in demand from
top orchestras around the world but is equally at home with
chamber music, improvisation, electronics and a range of playing
styles from different cultures. Particularly recommended for
cello lovers and players young and old.
“I wish more people would think about music the way
Matthew Barley does” The Times
