Long regarded as one of the world’s
finest drummers, any description of Billy Cobham runs the
risk of sounding like hyperbole to those who haven’t
heard of him; but how else to describe this jazz-rock-funk
tour de force? Collaborations with Miles Davis and his earth-shattering
work with guitarist John McLaughlin in The Mahavishnu Orchestra
continue to leave an indelible mark
on so much music that has followed.
This new project sees Cobham team up
with young Cuban band Asere. Asere are at the forefront of
developments in the Cuban Son scene, a 500-year-old music
combining Spanish guitar with African rhythms. Described by
the BBC’s Charlie Gillett as having ‘An element
of surprise and a sense of adventure...uniquely engaging and
different from other Cuban bands I have seen’, the pairing
of Asere and Billy Cobham takes both to new heights.
