Dancing down the leftfield and singing
in their own lilting Geordie accents, Rachel Unthank &
The Winterset are described by poet Ian MacMillan as the "inheritors,
curators and gleeful distorters" of Tyneside's traditions.
Discreetly provocative arrangements draw on elements of blues,
jazz, music hall, burlesque cabaret, classical and leftfield
contemporary music, making their take on folk music peerless,
fearless and wholeheartedly brave. They were nominated for
Best Group, Best Live Act, Best Album and The Horizon Award
at the 2008 BBC Folk Awards, and won the Horizon Award.
“They are like the morning dew
that hasn’t steamed off yet, they are new and fresh
and I really don’t think they know how good they are”
Robert Wyatt
Tonight brings you a double treat with
more new folk music from the North of England with Nancy Elizabeth,
hailed by the Guardian as a "gently powerful singer-songwriter
whose swooping voice, whether naked or multi-tracked, has
the purity and simplicity of a classic acoustic performer
and whose music goes straight for the emotional jugular.”
